What should English language teachers know about non-cognitive skills?
This presentation will briefly introduce key terms such as grit, optimism, and resilience from the field of educational psychology and the application of positive psychology dealing with such non-cognitive skills for English language teachers based in Japan. After discussing some of the research in this area, implications and practical activities for the classroom will be introduced. It is hoped that this presentation informs how English language teachers can better work with students considering their non-cognitive skills.
Keita Kikuchi is a Professor at Kanagawa University and a visiting researcher at University of the Ryukyus, Japan. He holds an Ed.D. in TESOL from Temple University, Japan and an MA in ESL from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa. His research interests include curriculum development and second language acquisition, especially individual differences.
